Got to check out the "acclaimed" Mousetrap Britpop dance night at the Black Cat last night. I was pretty pumped for some dancing; Britpop isn't really my thing but after a few pints it doesn't really matter. It was a bit slow getting started as the hipsters had to down enough PBR to get limber. The DJ wasn't helping things much with clubthumping hits by the Smiths and the like.

Finally the floor started filling up and DJ played the trump card with the quintessential Britpop standard Girls and Boys. And then he followed that with...I have no idea. But it sucked. My friend Joe, who is British, turned to me and asked, "Who is this?"

The next few songs brought us classics from pop artists Elvis Costello and Iggy Pop. Well...Iggy Pop has pop in his name. So I guess that works. Then DJ started schooling us on what exactly how far reaching Britpop has become with songs by Daft Punk (part of the EU so that qualifies) Cut Copy (British penal colony and Liam Gallagher has been to jail) and Vampire Weekend (no fucking idea).

So yeah, now I know that Britpop is as far reaching as the British Empire. Which really gives the DJ no excuse for not keeping the beats going. I had a decent time, but it was a bit underwhelming. Verdict, stay home and listen to Blur's greatest hits instead.

Posted this on facebook thanks to one of those annoying chainmails that is going around. I ignore most of them but find myself helpless against the musical ones. Thought I'd share.

Not a top twenty, just twenty albums that played a huge part in my life. Listed in my life's chronological order.

1. Vanilla Ice - To the Extreme
I'm pretty sure this was my first album I ever bought. Also the best album I ever bought.

2. Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
The first real rap album I got. Dubbed it on cassette from a friend. I'm pretty sure the cussing, fucking, and imbibing therein made me who I am today.

3. Offspring - Smash
The first rock album I bought. Opened me up to more than just pop and rap.

4. Bush - Sixteen Stone
I loved the shit out of this in high school and even considered Bush my favorite band. There. I said it.

5. The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death
This made Biggie my favorite rapper. I still know all the words to Notorious Thugs.

6. Impossibles - Impossibles
Ska/punk band from my high school that we worshipped. Sweet skankin times.

7. Rancid - ...And Out Come the Wolves
Really got me into punk. Tie for my favorite punk album ever.

8. NOFX - Punk in Drublic
Other favorite punk album, and favorite punk band.

9. Outkast - Aquemini
Introduced me to the genius of Andre and Big Boi. The best from a slew of genius albums.

10. Deftones - White Pony
Definition of a grower. Went from unlistenable to never leaving my cd player. Covered some dark times.

11. Bjork - Post
I spent a whole semester in college listening to nothing but Bjork. While living in a frat house. My roommates loved me.

12. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
One of the albums that helped transition me into the indie snob I am today.

13.Radiohead - Kid A
This album still scares the hell out of me. Considered it my favorite for a few years. Haven't listened to it for awhile though.

14. Postal Service - Give Up
Ahhhhh...no comment.

15. My Morning Jacket - At Dawn
This album destroyed me, and still does to this day.

16. The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone
Long live the Tuff Ghost. This album pretty much defines my stint in NYC.

17. Kanye West - The College Droupout
Pure genius. Proof Kanye used to be fun and funny!

18. Songs: Ohia - The Electric Magnolia Co.
I'll always associate this album with watching the sunrise over the Hudson river.

19. Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Teeth Like God's Shoeshine will fight you in a dark alley. Called Modest Mouse my favorite band for a few years mostly due to this album.

20. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
This owned my 2008.

Penn State....Basketball?

I never blog about basketball, just can't get into the NBA and Penn State has generally drained my love for the college game over the years. But looks like we may have a team here the next couple years. Who knew Ed DeChellis was a program builder?

Thanks to the "hated-until-it-was-picked-up-in-my-region"Big Ten Network, I have been able to watch every single Penn State game this year instead of just the annual drubbing by Michigan State or Illinois on ESPN2.

Last night I got to see the Lions outlast Illinois in the lowest scoring game in the NCAA since 2005. (EDIT - this is wrong, fuck me for trusting the AP) How low scoring? 38-33! If Daryll Clark led our offense to 38 points, it would've been an off game. The game may have been ugly, but it was damn entertaining. And it gave us yet another quality road win to polish up our tourney resume. For those counting at home, that's wins against Mich. St., Illinois, Purdue, and Minnesota. As long as we don't choke down the stretch, looks like we'll be dancing come March. First time since the glorious 2001 season.

The future looks bright. The University finally decided to give a damn, investing in new facilities to help attract top recruits. We're starting to attract out-of-staters like Chris Babb, who should be a breakout star next season. Cornley and Pringle are graduating, but Battle is only a sophmore, and Jones is slowly turning into a solid inside presence. And then there's Tim Frazier, one of our star recruits for next season. Just 6'2", but check out the hops on this kid.

Song of the Day: Radiohead - 15 Step (Live at the Grammys - featuring the USC Marching Band)

I actually made it a point to watch the traditionally boring Grammys because of the exciting performances this year. Radiohead, M.I.A., Lil Wayne...and the Jonas Brothers! They were still pretty boring in between the highlights, so I live-tweeted to pass the time. Also followed along with Diplo who was predictably hilarious.

The absolute highlight of the night was Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood ripping shit up. You already knew the drums of 15 Step were righteous, know amplify that with the marching band and you've got epicness.

And, I'm still having nightmares about the chick from Sugarland looking like a hot version of the chick from Reno 911. Lucid nightmares, man. Get out ma brain!

Song of the Day: Paper Route - You Kill Me

Saw Passion Pit last night at the Ottobar. Have I mentioned how much I love that place? Sound is great, never crowded, and PBR on tap for 3 bucks. Genius. Anyway, was pretty much underwhelmed by Passion Pit. They have one awesome song, and after that...not much. The singer's falsetto really started to bug me after awhile. Don't get me wrong, I love me some annoying voices, but he pretty much just couldn't sing and used a falsetto to hide it.

The real treat was opener Paper Route. I hadn't heard them before, but they basically rocked an ambient sound over some nice guitars. Indie emo. Nothing groundbreaking, but damn entertaining. Check out You Kill Me off their Myspace page. Sorry, couldn't find a decent video.

Although I'm digging Paper Route right now, they're only my SECOND favorite new group that has Paper Route in their name. Straight out of Alabama, I give you Woodgrain, by Paper Route Gangstaz.

Here's Tuesday's song of the day a couple hours early. You win. So I've never really got the indie obsession with Animal Collective. Just a bunch of fucking hippies with dumb names jumping around a campfire and making treepeople noises. But Panda Bear's album last year started to win me over. And now there's the long-awaited Merriweather Post Pavilion, named after the venue in Columbia. And Animal Collective IS a Baltimore band...so I guess I should give them a chance. I still can't completely get behind the album, but there are quite a few good tracks on it.

The first three minutes of My Girls are a bit strange. Not musically strange...but...it leaves you thinking...this is kind of good...but where the fuck is it going. Don't worry, it's a test. You'll soon understand. Wait for it...

It's Thursday and it's the daily double for song of the day. A few weeks ago, I liked the Frightened Rabbit album, but not enough to include it in my top 25. But then I saw them earlier this week at the Talking Head and they were fannnnntastic. Now I can't stop listening to the album. Head Rolls Off is their first single, not my favorite but the only track I could find a proper video for. Backwards Walk is my favorite song of the moment, with Fast Blood and The Modern Leper close behind. Do yourself a favor and pick up The Midnight Organ Fight.

5. Portishead - Third

I've always liked Portishead, but 2008 might be the year where I started to love Portishead. After a long hiatus, the masses were psyched to have Beth Gibbons back to sing us some sultry lullabyes. But Portishead didn't exactly release a reunion album. They got fierce. The second the vocals hit, you know it's a Portishead album...but there's something different. The songs have an edge; they bite. This threw a lot of people off, as it wasn't the tried and true formula that made Portishead famous. I welcome the new direction. We'll always have Dummy, quite possibly the sexiest album ever recorded. They probably weren't going to top it. Instead we have a new direction, new possibilities. Don't stop now y'all...you've got me wanting more.

4. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III

I said that 2007 belonged to Weezy, so I guess this year makes it official. If you didn't already know it from the magazine covers, the commercials, the blogging, or just being on every other song on the radio, 2008 officially coronated Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., as the king of rap. Despite all the guest and media appearances, it wouldn't really mean much if he didn't bring it on the highly anticipated Tha Carter III. And does he ever. The mixtape fire is replaced by polished steel, with improved production and better verses. He's still funny, but instead of off the cuff ass jokes you get clever punchlines that hold for multiple listens. Sure, there's the undeniable hits. Lollipop. A Milli. Got Money. But there's also "Dr. Carter," the track that finally highlights Wayne's brain and creativity. There's "Phone Home," the left field track that has Wayne following the trail blazed by Outkast. There's a few too many slow jams on here for me to appreciate...but I can't be mad for him mugging for the ladies as well. Without a doubt, this is the most exciting rap album I've heard since The College Dropout. Now the only question is...will Weezy kill his brain on the syrup before he gets us a proper follow up?

The folk resurgence has been going on for the last few years in the indie world, but now it's official hippies: the sixties are back. Like CSNY reborn, these long hairs have brought the rock...well, the thoughtful, spiritual rock, man. Beautiful harmonies sprinkled over slow-building epics are featured on practically every track over this EP and LP. These kids are young, so hopefully we have a long and bright future to look forward to. Down with hipsters, up with hippies!

2. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

In indie years, Vampire Weekend might already be fifty years old. In late '07, tales of their greatness spread throughout the hipsternet like wildfire, making them the next in a long line of annointed kings in the footsteps of The Strokes. When their debut album arrived in January, lines were drawn to make them either the best, or most overrated, band around. But when you cut through the hype, what you find at the bottom of everything are vibrant, charming pop songs that remind you of why we like music in the first place. From start to finish, this album is a joy to listen to. Besides that, what I really like about this band is their authenticity. After seeing them live, you get the feeling that these guys are dorks like the rest of us. They're not some guys from Brooklyn jumping on the next trend, acting like rock stars. They geniunely like what they play. That enthusiasm is evident in their songs, and shines through in their live shows.

1. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

At this point, the story behind this album is almost as famous as the album itself. Whether it was Emma, the mono, or Wisconsin, Justin Vernon achieved a true state of otherworldlyness that is laid out bare for all to see. It hits you within the first few bars of "Flume:" this guy sings like a wounded angel descended from heaven. This album is complete with beautiful, timeless songs that I fear he will never live up to again. Personally, I carried this album through all the ups and downs of 2008 and it has come to mean so much to me. I feel a part of those woods inside me, a part of his pain. For an artist to express that much emotion and have it affect its listener is a rare and special thing. That's why it's my number one album of 2008.

9. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals

Um, yeah. So you also know the Girl Talk too. You like it or you don't. Personally, I want to die while listening to "Since You've Been Gone" mixed with Nine Inch Nails and MC Hammer. But that's just me. (1:05 mark of the video)

8. British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?

Why, yes. I do like rock music. Thank you for asking. British Sea Power decided to go in a new direction for their new album. The direction was to be awesome and not sucky like their last album. If you like huge rock music and you like fun then turn this on and turn it up. Oh, and fuck you Pitchfork.

7. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid

If you didn't know this, I kind of like Elbow. So this ranking may be skewed a bit. Or maybe not, as they won the Mercury Award for best album from the UK. Even beat out Radiohead...which I'm not sure I agree with...but couldn't be happier for them in any case. Here's an amazing quality video of them in concert. The opening lights, vocals, and horns of Starlings kills me.

6. Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple

Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse are back again to prove that they weren't just a novelty act or a one-hit wonder. Anyone that's ever listened to either one's solo steez would know better. From top to bottom, The Odd Couple is stronger than St. Elsewhere. There's no "Crazy," but in its place are a plethora of pop gems that will get you shakin. Suprisingly dark, Cee-Lo shows there's a lot more goin on inside his mind than the standard emcee. Hopefully these two aren't done just yet.

15. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Yet another strong album from Okkervil River; this just might be my favorite to date. More complete from start to finish than the Stage Names, and possibly even better than Black Sheep Boy. But don't hold me to that. So yeah, another Austin band. I wonder how long Austin can keep pumping out bands with all the hipsters moving there to upset the hippie balance.

14. The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

Turns out this side band thing wasn't such a bad idea after all. I didn't get into Broken Boy Soldier at all (cept for this) and wasn't really looking forward to the follow up. But Jack brought his A game, and "the other guy" Brendan Benson finally seems to fit in. The songs are tight and bring both the ballad and the rockout. I'm still a Stripes guy, but this is a nice appetizer to keep me waiting patiently.

13. TV on the Radio - Dear Science,

The much-anticipated album from the Kings of Brooklyn. This made most everyone's top 5 this year, and can't say I can find anything wrong with the album. They actually did what I wanted, kept the innovative songwriting but reigned in the weirdness to make a more compact, accessible album. But I can't help but feel like there's something missing. Not sure what...maybe it's the emotion. Jesus, remember this? Ah, the grass is always greener. Anyway, it's still an incredible album that most bands would kill to record in their lifetime.

12. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

In 2008, this Brooklyn duo became the poster children for all aspiring hipsters. Ironically, the same hipsters that built them up probably now trash them as "that band that used to be good." All that aside, this band got huge in '08 because of this fantastic debut. Combining a few electro-synth tracks with classic hippie rock and a kick-ass live show, MGMT has a bright future ahead of 'em.

11. The Black Keys - Attack & Release

The consistently awesome Black Keys got out of any potential rut on this one by adding the can't miss producer Danger Mouse. I was curious how much the Mouse could add to the traditionally under-produced Keys. He fits in perfectly, building up choruses and adding a few new sounds but mostly letting Dan and Pat do their thing.

20. Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing

Making a mixtape about Seinfeld is definitely an intriguing concept for an underground rapper, let alone one that isn't white. The amazing thing here is that Wale elevates this tape from novelty to insta-classic. He showcases his creativity with a view on the state of racism in America wrapped around Kramer's racist comedy show rant from earlier this year. He has a guest appearance by Weezy like everyone else, but calls the song "The Cliche Lil Wayne Feature." Possibly most hilarious, he actually gets Elaine on the tape to yell motherfucker. I have a feeling we're gonna be seeing a lot more of this cat in 2009. I can't wait. Download the mixtape for free here.

19. Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst

I am as shocked as most of you on this one. I used to like Bright Eyes, but I haven't really been able to handle anything after Lifted. Actually, I've taken to cringing any time I see his whiny ass anywhere. But I gave this a chance, and whaddyaknow...it's good. Really good. Conor back to simple songs about soul searching, life, love. Now if only I could get him to make another Desaparecidos album...

18. Kanye West - 808s and Heartbreaks

Damn it Yeezy, you did it again. I couldn't wait to start hating on this album before it even came out. Really, Kanye? I know you're sad and stuff...but singing a whole album on autotune? Are you out of your fucking mind? Well..turns out he isn't. Per the usual, he's a fucking genius. This sounds like a Depeche Mode album...beautifully dark and atmospheric. But... I do hope he finds his mind in rhymin forthwith.

17. The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound

This year's Against Me! award for best album out of left field from a punk rock label goes to...The Gaslight Anthem. They are from New Jersey, but you could've figured it out in ten seconds...cause they sound just like Bruce Springsteen. Or you could just call them The Hold Steady for kids. The '59 features twelve instantaneously catchy songs that will have you rockin out like you're back in high school.

16. Hot Chip - Made in the Dark

Ahh, it's my favorite band featuring Kip from Napoleon Dynamite. Another great album from these lads from Britain. They're a great time live, go see 'em if you get the chance. Oh, and...you're my number one guy!

25. Spiritualized - Songs in A & E

Jason Pierce took some time off from music to do some personal things, like almost die. No big deal. Lucky for us he didn't, coming back with this lush, orchestral album that focuses on death and fire. Also uses the respirator he was on as background music on a track. Nice.

24. Titus Andronicus - Airing of Grievances

This band takes their name from Shakespeare's first and most awesomely bloody play. I also played Titus in college (thanks Luke!). Maybe this explains my love for this band. Or maybe it's song titles like "Fear and Loathing in Mahwah, NJ." The anger you hear on this album is easily understood by anyone who lived in central New Jersey. Poor bastards.

23. David Byrne and Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today

The problem with big name pairings like this is that they usually let down the impossibly high expectations. That's not the case here. The two cagey vets play to each other's strong points with this beautiful album.

22. Los Campesinos! - We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed

Los C put out dos albums in 2008, and most everyone seemed to prefer the other. I give the nod to this one cause it's slightly more upbeat and fun, which is what I look for in seven piece Welsh ska/punk bands. They're playing the Ottobar next week with Titus, can't wait for that show.

21. The Very Best - The Very Best Mixtape

Esau Mwamwaya, a Malawi-born singer now living in London teams up with Radioclit, a European based producer duo to present a mix of African music with current indie. There's M.I.A., Vampire Weekend, Santogold, and even some Beatles thrown in. I have so much damn fun listening to this record, pretty impossible not to be in a good mood. Wilderness - (K)no(w)here

I've been finding out that Baltimore is home to some fantastic music, with Wilderness being one of my local favorites. This is a concept record that slowly flows its distant post-punk from track to track without being in any hurry. Not exactly car-driving music. Well, unless its 3am and you're alone, inching down a barren road towards the abyss. Then it would be pretty sweet.

Atmosphere - Strictly Leakage

2008 saw Atmosphere make a huge comeback. His last album was terrible, and I didn't really like anything he did since Lucy Ford. But this mixtape, actually released the last week of 2007, became my instant winter danceparty favorite with its horn infused beats and head-bobbin' rhymes. He came out with another solid album in 2008, but this is my favorite. Download it free, then go pick up ladies at the grocery store.

A Bleach for 2008 perhaps? Or maybe this art-punk band just figured out how to make catchy songs. Whatever, it fucking rocks.

Shit, I just had to go to Wikipedia to find out how old Q-Tip is. He's 38! It's been 18 years since he did this! And 15 since this! Fuck I'm old. Anyway, put this classy hip-hop album on and let your head start bobbin'.

Kid Cudi - A Kid Named Cudi

Another promising rapper from Kanye's stable. Not quite Lupe, but you can tell he's got a mind for lyrics and keeping shit original. This mixtape features beats mixing Outkast, Band of Horses, and N*E*R*D. You can download the whole thing for free here.

Shearwater - Rook

Fantastic year for these dudes that also play in Okkervil River. How they have this many epic songs in them is beyond me. Shearwater leans toward the prettier of the two bands, and their debut is elegant while still saving a little time to rock out.

I sat down a couple weeks ago to start listing out albums I liked in 2008. After going through iTunes, I wrote down over 80 albums. Yikes. So I spent the last few weeks going back and giving lots of second listens, and finally narrowed the list down to my favorite 25 albums of 2008. But there was lots of stuff I really liked that didn't make the cut. Give em' a listen, there might be something you dig.

Lykke Li - Youth Novels

An adorable album from this Swedish pop singer. I really need to move to Sweden already. Come check her out with me in DC at the synagogue on January 31st.

Awesome debut from this Austin rock trio. Got to see a bit of their set at ACL, great live vibe. I expect more from them in the near future.

Jay goes poppy in this collection of 7" records from 2008. I don't like it nearly as much as Blood Visions, but it's still pretty rad.

Annuals - Such Fun

The follow-up to 2006's classic Be He Me. It's more accessible, but I think some of the emotion is lost with the polish. Still a good album.

Kings of Leon - Only by the Night

My favorite guilty pleasure of the year. It's arguable if they "sold out" since they were just playing to the garage band trends of the early 00's anyway. But at least on Youth & Young Manhood they had a sweet Southern edge to go with it. Here they just made an indie Nickelback record. Which is incredibly catchy. And will make them lots more money. So, um, good I guess.

Another Austin band. Formed by some members of the defunct crappy band Sound Team. Which really surprised me when I found out since this is really original stuff. The Glowing City takes you on a glorious pop journey with some electro bolts thrown in. Good stuff.

Beach House - Devotion

Finally some love for Balmer. This duo follows up to their self titled with an even stronger sophmore effort. Dream songs perfect for late nights.

2008 was a great year for shows. I swear some weeks I spent most of my time making that lovely commute down 95 to the 9:30 Club or Black Cat. Once again, courtesy of last.fm, I can rehash some of my favorite shows from 2008.

1. Elbow - April 27th - Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

I already wrote about this show in depth, so I won't go into it again. I still remember it vividly, and doubt I'll ever forget.

2. Radiohead - May 11th - Bristow, VA

Anyone who's seen Radiohead before knows that they don't play. This was my third time seeing them, and it seems every time something memorable happens to make it even the more interesting. This one was no different. Temperature fell from 75 to 45 hours before the show, and the skies opened up, unleashing a flood on rural Virginia. Half the roads closed, ensuring many of the crowd wouldn't make it in time for the show. Those that did were in for a treat. Violently shivering throughout the set, wading knee deep in water to get back to my car, sitting in the parking lot for three hours to leave, getting lost in Virginia at 2am on a Sunday...worth every second.

3. Bon Iver - August 1st - Black Cat

I have a man crush on Justin Vernon. I don't care who knows it. I want to shout it on the mountain tops. Made it even better to share this concert with a new friend.

4. Fleet Foxes - October 3rd - Black Cat

Another wonderful show at the Black Cat. Acoustics and harmonies were perfect.

5. Kanye West - August 10th - Virgin Fest - Pimlilco

Virgin Fest had a plethora of good shows - NIN, Chromeo, Stone Temple Pilots, The Go! Team, BRMC. But Kanye was the show stealer. Fresh off his infamous appearance at Bonnaroo, the humble Kanye earned himself an army of hippie enemies who still talk about what an asshole he was. But at Pimlico, he proved why they were all so excited to see him in the first place. What a contrast with the earlier appearance by Lil' Wayne; Kanye was on point, you could sense his perfectionism. Every person on stage, every light, every note, it was that way for a reason, because he planned it that way. And he had it exactly right.

6. Wilco - February 27th - 9:30 Club

I saw Wilco twice this year, both times they were predictably awesome. Nod goes to the 9:30 Club over the Lyric Opera House because of the smaller venue size.

7. The Swell Season - September 26th - Austin City Limits - Zilker Park

Glen Hansard is God. Here's a video I shot with him trying to destroy his guitar. The quality is terrible, but you get the idea. Even better, he's a better video someone else shot.

8. The Hives - March 8th - 9:30 Club

THE HIVES MAKE EXCELLENT ROCK SONG CONCERT YES. Best stage presence I've ever seen...except maybe for Andrew W.K. Here's another crappy quality video, but just watching them again makes me want to punch myself in the face.

Top 5 New Old Albums of the Year

It's December, and along with half the internets, I'm getting caught up in making my 2008-best-of lists. What gets consistently lost in these lists is that half the "new" music we listen to each year didn't actually come out in 2008. Why can't I make a list with my favorite albums of the year, and it doesn't matter when they came out? That's actually my friend John's idea, but it doesn't completely work for me...I wouldn't know where to begin comparing Revolver with Fleet Foxes. So I'm keeping the 2008 list separate, and presenting my favorite five albums of the year that I heard for the first time in 2008, but didn't come out this year.

5. Ben Folds Five - The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner (1999)

This album came out my senior year of high school, and I'm not sure how I missed it. I, like most high-schoolers, was in love with Forever and Ever Amen and couldn't get enough of that Brick song that made BFF huge in '98. I guess I got most of music from the radio in those days, and the powers that be decided that this new album was too out there for radio play and it should be ignored. Damn shame. My friend Stephanie turned me on to this album this year and I was immediately hooked. "Narcolepsy" might be my favorite new old song of the year. The band reunited this year to play one show - this album in its entirety. It's an entertaining show, you can watch it here.

4. Annuals - Be He Me (2006)

I saw Annuals open for Black Kids and Tom Morello at Fletcher's. They were by far the best band, even though they only played songs off their new album. Great venue, only holds like 50 people up by the stage. After the show, I chatted with them as they put their instruments back in their van. I forget sometimes that these bands I love are just kids on tour without much money and aren't close to being the rock stars we imagine. I digress. This album is a masterpiece.

3. Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil (1976)

God damn this Brazilian knows how to lay down the beat. John turned me Jorge Ben's self titled as the perfect summer album. It was good, but then I heard this and it was all over. Blasted this all over the OBX this summer, and its still keeping me warm in the winter.

2. Jay Reatard - Blood Visions (2006)

I spent half of 2008 reading news about some guy named Retard beating people up at his shows. Finally I had to find out why people would go to shows knowing they could well get punched in the face. And...wow. One of the best punk albums I've ever heard. I will line up to let him punch me in the face.

By far my favorite old new album of the year, Dan turned me onto this after I played him Fleet Foxes. Nearly every song is perfect. Killer guitar, harmonies, insightful lyrics, this album makes me want to travel back in time just so I can drop acid, have some orgies, and protest the war.

1. MGMT. Hipsters be damned, I had a good time.

2. John Fogerty. Fuckin' Creedence, man! This band lead to the exchange of the weekend, when I walked up halfway through the set and asked some ladies (first mistake) if he had played any CCR yet. The girl pulled out her schedule and informed me that she didn't see that band, did I mean CSS? Luckily the guy behind her overheard and told me, "Man, he's playin mostly Creedence." Jackpot!

Disappointing -

1. Beck. Played the hits, sounded okay, but doesn't have much stage presence. Lights were eh...expected more. C'mon, it's Beck!

2. Robert Earl Keen. Play the fucking Christmas song! I don't care if you've played it 37 million times and I've heard it 34 million times. You don't take the Our Father out of mass, asshole.

Best Shows

1. Foo Fighters. You forget how many good songs they have until they play nothin but hits for 2 hours. Fantastic end to the show. But really, you don't play 'This is a Call' or 'I'll Stick Around'?

2. Okkervil River - Was not really planning to catch them since they sucked last year when I saw 'em. But they brought their 'A' game and had me dancin like a MFer.

3. Tegan and Sara. Mmmm lesbians.

4. Heartless Bastards/White Denim. Got two catch these two bands on a smaller stage, and only saw half of each set, but fuck yeah they ruled.

Disappointing - Raconteurs. They weren't bad. But probably set my expectations too high. After Jack White didn't grow 35 feet tall and explode Houston with his laser eye retina missles, I was kinda let down.

Overall, didn't enjoy the music as much as last year but it was still a great time. Big ups to the festival for keeping shit affordable and having great eats. And whoever had the genius idea to get people to collect recyclables for free swag, I expect you to solve the economic crisis in the next few weeks.

Already bought my tickets for next year, but I'm also keepin an eye out for Bonnaroo and Coachella.

Went and saw Step Brothers last night at the swanky new theatre in Harbor East. I've skipped the last 17 Will Ferrell sports movies but this one looked like a return to form.

Verdict? Eh...I'd see it but wait for video. You'll laugh your ass off at parts, but it's really really stupid. There's not really a plot at all...not that it matters but sometimes that makes a movie more enjoyable. However, there was one genius rap: called Boats N' Hoes. I need to get this on my iPod. August has arrived and brought the dog days of summer. Which means lots of beach volleyball and rad concerts. But it also means the arrival of football and fútbol!

The Redskins kicked off the NFL preseason by defeating the Colts 30-16. Offense looked good for the 3 plays they were out there, scoring a TD right off the bat. Colt Brennan surprised, (granted against crappy defense) going 9-10 with 2 TDs. But the most reassuring thing was Jim Zorn looking relaxed on the sidelines, acting like he actually is the head coach of the Washington Redskins. It was only a preseason game...but baby steps people...baby steps.

Penn State got off to a rough start already with another string of arrests and JoePa's embarassment on Outside the Lines. Can't say enough about what Paterno has done for PSU. He's still graduating 80% of his students when schools like Ohio State are graduating less than 50%. But every year he seems more and more out of touch with coaching, recruiting, and the real world in general. Love you forever...but man...it's time to go.

But you could say I'm even more excited for the arrival of the soccer season, which Sevilla kicked off in style by winning the Railways Cup, a preseason tournament in Moscow. Sevilla beat AC Milan and Lokomotiv Moscow in a tournament that also featured Chelsea. Not too shabby. I'm looking forward to another win in the Kanoute Cup (UEFA Cup) but anything less than Champions League qualification will be a disappointment. Venga Manolo!

In other soccer news, check out the Red Bulls embarass themselves against Barcelona, Wednesday on ESPN2. I'm guessing 5-0 Barcelona.

The Olympics for soccer kick off on Thursday (before opening ceremonies strangely enough) with the USA taking on Japan. Set those TIVOs to MSNBC, cause the game starts at 5am. The USA has a tough group with Nigeria, Netherlands, and Japan. I'd love to see them make the medal round but I'm not sure I see it in the cards this year. I'm still psyched to see the Altidore-McBride partnership, the past and future of the US strike force.

Yeah, everyone and their mom likes this album. And for once I agree with em. Got Money is the jam of the summer. Long live ridiculous hip hop videos. Can't wait to see Weezy at VirginFest.

2. Jay Reatard - Blood Visions

Jay Reatard will kick your ass. Literally. This 2006 release flew under the radar until Jay started fighting people at his shows. Thank god he did, cause this is the best punk album I've heard in years.

Still hanging around. I keep listening to this and it keeps getting better.

4. Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - Deja Vu

After raving about Fleet Foxes to anyone who would listen, a friend told me they sounded like CSNY. And he was wrong. CSNY sound better. Fucking hippies.

Thanks to Deadspin (via TMZ) for unearthing this awesome Shaq freestyle entitled: "Kobe, how's my ass taste?" This is fantastic. Besides being funny and genuinely catchy, it reminds us all why we love Shaq and hate Kobe. As a man, I'll never forgive him for throwing Shaq, and really all men, under the bus just because he got busted. In case you forgot, after getting hauled in on rape charges, Kobe famously said that he “should have done what Shaq does … Shaq would pay his women not to say anything.”

I found out about this video yesterday thanks to those expedetious interwebs, on one of those trashy sports blogs that Buzz loves so much. But that's their function. I expect to hear entertaining crap like this from blogs. Sure there's the tired, bloggers are just losers in their parents' basement argument, which is half-lazy/half-deserved. (Fuck you though, I'm at work, no wireless in my basement) Even though mainstream journalists continue to hurl insults and generally fear the arrival of blogs as a medium, the line between blogs and "traditional media" continues to blur.

This morning, I saw this Shaq rap video on Sportscenter.

Think about that for a second. Maybe the "MTV-ization" of Sportscenter has reached a point where nothing is too out of the ordinary, but I found this striking. Sure it could be considered newsworthy, but really...this is something you want on the air? I wonder how Buzz feels about this. Anyone who blasts blogs for reporting stuff like this would have to point the finger at ESPN as well if they don't want to come off like a hypocrite.

Is this the grand strategy for "traditional media" to combat the oncoming blog surge? By imitating them? Maybe someone up there in Bristol is that far ahead of the game, truly understanding that it is futile to resist the movement. Nice to imagine...but somehow I doubt that the same people who brought us "Who's Now?" could grasp something like that.

Ever read a Pitchfork review and wonder what the fuck they're talking about? You're ready to hear some new tunes, want some recommendations, and all of a sudden you feel like you're back in 11th grade reading a Joyce novel. Ever download some record they gave a 9.7 and it turns out to be a Norwegian guy masturbating in a cave? Ever love an album they gave a 2.1? And what does a 6.7 really mean anyway?? Well, then you know what I'm talking about. Pitchfork is great for finding some bands I'd never otherwise hear...I can just do without the fuck-off- my-skinny-jeans- made-my-brain-swell- ten-times-larger- than-yours-attitude. So sit back, relax, and let me translate the latest 'fork review for ya.

Today's review: Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III
Pitchfork's rating: 8.7 [Best New Music]

As with every single music publication out there right now, from Vibe to Rolling Stone to Gorilla vs. Bear, Pitchfork is riding Weezy's jock. And who can blame them? Over the last couple years, Dwayne Carter Jr. has played the internet better than anyone. Using the free-distrubution and word of mouth game that the net specializes in, Wayne has dropped free mixtape after mixtape and watched his fanbase explode.

This provides an interesting lesson to young would-be MCs: It doesn't matter what your studio albums sound like as long as you pull a Robin Hood afterwards and distribute free music to the people. If you haven't heard Tha Carter I or II...don't. All it's worth is a flashback to 1999 and grinding on some drunk co-ed while Juvenile vomits all over Back That Azz Up. Listening to that song now is like having that "best pizza slice ever" you ate drunk at 3 AM for lunch. You spend most of your time trying not to gag while wondering what the hell you were thinking. But Da Drought III on the other hand...pure class. A mixtape worth of summer jams, all kindly donated to your ipod by the Weez. Ingenious...what he lost in revenue he more than made up in promotion and street cred.

Anyway, onto the Pitchfork review. The first half discusses Wayne's guitar abilities (abysmal) and his youth (prodigal). It's actually not a bad read for Pitchfork standards, but that's something you can expect as the hip-hop critics' self-righteousness generally pales in comparison to the indie critics. But there are still a few gems like: "Such details add even more gravitas to his grizzled, elastic timbre, which suggests an impossibly hoarse (and high) David Ruffin at times." Despite their douchy prowess, Pitchfork pretty much got this one right. The album is by far Wayne's best to date. It doesn't waste any time with bullshit skits, just hits right into the nasty. "3 Peat" made my jaw drop with awesome offensiveness the same way Eminem did with "Kill You" back on the Marshall Mathers LP. "Mr. Carter" one-ups the obligatory Jay-Z radio joint. You have your opinion on "A Milli" by this point. It didn't catch me at first, but now it's hit me tougher than Nigerian hair. "Got Money" succeeds despite the "California Love" voice. Based on the first four tracks, I was ready to declare this the best hip-hop album of the last three years.

Unfortunately, Wayne has taken his new-found #1 emcee status into thinking he has to be all things to all people. Which means that there are about five too many slow, boring, collaborative R&B songs. Hey Weezy, not sure if you got the memo, but people DON'T like Ja Rule for this reason. Just do your duet with Babyface (!) and call it a day.

It's not all crap though. "Dr. Carter" and "Phone Home" let Wayne's insane creativity shine through. Seriously, comparing yourself to E.T. and spitting "I can get your brains for a bargain/like I bought 'em at Target"? I bow down. The only thing left to do is throw in a Macho Man Randy Savage reference. Oh, wait. He does that too.

VERDICT

The 'fork rating is too high, but not by much. The most visionary tracks are up there with anything Outkast has done, but there are just too many formulaic pop songs to render this a classic. It will probably just settle for hip-hop album of the year.

Found this interesting article (thanks SF) from SI.com by a self-described soccer hater. Or as I call them, soccerphobes, because like a homophobe, they share the same ignorant fear of something they hate without bothering to understand.

He offers up the same tired arguments against soccer, but at least tackles the issue with an open mind, and comes away with a smidgeon of respect for the game. I applaud him for at least checking out something he used to bash for no reason. See, that's the thing that bugs me. I don't give a shit if people don't like soccer, it's when they bash it without ever watching it that makes me want to stab someone.

The only thing in the article that doesn't make much sense is when he says, "After five days and six matches I can now say that I enjoy soccer at its best -- though I continue to despise it at its worst." Thanks for that tremendous insight. But wouldn't you say this for any sport? Or you truly enjoy watching the Royals beat the Indians 5-1 in an error-filled game? You can't wait to sit down to see the Arizona Cardinals beat the Bills 9-3 in a field goal filled offensive masterpiece? That's just the way sports is.

Whether it's Sevilla FC, the Red Bulls, the MLS, US National team, or just good soccer in particular, you can generally find me up on my soap box preaching to the masses and fighting the good fight. I get tired of people being generally uninformed and repeating ignorant things they heard...but I guess I should blame the media for that.

- Surprised I listened to Cut Copy that much..."Lights and Music" is a great track, but I don't think I like the rest of the album that much
- I had the MGMT album as a dark horse for album of the year when it came out, but I never find myself in the mood for it anymore
- Can't say enough about the new Gnarls album. It's a grower as well...and it's leagues better than their debut. Should be a great show at ACL.

The problem with going to a concert with a million awesome bands...is that the schedule-makers hate you and purposely put two (or three!!!) bands you like on at the same time so that you have to choose. Last year I missed a few bands...but nothing like this. Ugh.

N.E.R.D. vs. Ryan Bingham

This one isn't really a contest...I'm going to see N.E.R.D. and they will rock. But I've been trying to see Bingham for over a year now and something keeps coming up. He's the country version of Lupe Fiasco as the star-crossed band I shall never see.

The Swell Season vs. G Love

If this were a Frames show, it would be no contest. But it's the Swell Season, who also rule but I'm not sure if their intimate sound will translate to the sweaty large scale festival. I'm still leaning towards them though as I've seen G Love before and I'm not a fan of his last few albums. But I-76 will always hold a special place in my heart.

The Mars Volta vs. Manu Chao

Ugh. I'm not really annoyed I have to choose here, not that excited about either one. But why the fuck are they both headlining? Should've put Robert Plant here. I always give the Volta a chance because of my lingering feelings for ATDI...but they're beyond pretentious. Which is hard for a prog metal band. And then there's Chao...I always say I like world music...but I like it enough to casually check them out for a 1:30 time slot, not headlining.

MGMT vs. Old 97's

I'm really torn here. I love the new MGMT cd and I think they'd be fun live. But the Old 97's are a timeless classic. I may be leaning toward the Old 97's based on history...and the show being in Texas...but I'm not sure.

Jamie Lidell vs. Jose Gonzalez

I think I'll go check out Mr. Lidell and his glorious soul. Not sure how the quiet sounds of Jose will sound outside...I'd still like to see him though.

The Black Keys vs. Iron & Wine

Yargh...I've seen them both...and I want to see them both again. If I follow the general rule that loud bands make better outdoor shows, I'd go with the Keys. I think it pins on whether or not I see the Keys at Virgin Fest in August.

Robert Plant and Allison Kraus vs. Beck

Seriously, could this day get any worse? I mean, I'm going to see Beck, and it's not really that close. But you don't get many chances in your life to see Robert Plant. If it was him by himself, I'd really be fucked. Yargh.

The Raconteurs vs. Gnarls Barkley vs. Heartless Bastards

I'm going to stab someone in the face. I just sold my Raconteurs tickets last week here in DC because I was seeing them in Austin. Just like last year when I skipped the White Stripes show here and then they cancelled ACL. I'm going to see Gnarls, but damn if I won't miss Mr. White. And then there's the poor Heartless Bastards. I saw them last year and they were good, I dig them. But I wonder whose mother they fucked to be placed against these two giants. If they have seven people in their crowd, I'll be surprised.

Band of Horses vs. Tegan and Sara

Another two bands I really want to see. Haven't really decided yet. I love me some swooning country indie rock, and I love me some lesbian power pop. Damn you schedule makers. I smite thee!!!!!

Movie of the Forever: Southland Tales

Sometimes a movie transcends so much epic awesomeness it probably doesn't even exist. Think: Gymkata, Rodentz, Top Gun.

Much like Macho Man Randy Savage did for the song, Richard Kelly has stretched the boundaries of the film to realms previously thought as unreachable. Southland Tales is the most amazing, mind-bogglingly epic diasaster I have ever laid eyes upon. Uncontent to fail on a small scale, Richard Kelly casts every B-list actor ever to share this incomprehensibly massive tale. You know how people say you can't look away from a train wreck? This is like trying to look away from a Nazi Hurricane Katrina that molests children.

I've been trying to think of a way to describe the film to people and it's damn near impossible. Imagine Jerry Bruckheimer making a David Lynch film...and adding in some Michael Moore for good measure. And that captures 1/10 of it.

Anyway, see it. And if you make it through the end, kudos, you've undoubedtly seen the best movie ever starring the Rock and Cheri Oteri.

1. Every time the movie opens with Justin Timberlake narrating, drink all alcohol in your house.

I've been working my way through this massive indie rock compilation I found online when this sexy number popped out at me. The 70s sounding bassline kicked in and I immediately looked at the name on the track...Feisty Stevens. Cool name, never heard of em. The sultry female vocals sounded vaguely familiar but I couldn't place it. Then the second verse hits and it's Sufjan Stevens singing a track off the awesome Illinois. Hmmm... Feisty.... Stevens.... mashup you've tricked me again!

Anyway, it's a rare example of a mashup taking two good songs and making a song that sounds like it was born from the Earth's core. Kudos, Kevan Gilbert.

Mr. Murphy, everything you touch turns to dance. LCD Soundsystem's newest opus is from the '21' soundtrack. I don't know much about the movie, other than they be playing cards. What I do know is- Cards + this song = movie of the year.

The song starts with a 2.5 minute instrumental buildup before the vocals kick in, slowly building again until you get pummelled by the wall of sound. Guaranteed to have you banging your hand against the steering wheel and dancing in your car seat on the 8am commute.

One of the reasons I love last.fm is the ability to see what you've actually been listening to over the last few weeks or months. People often ask me what I've been listening to lately, and sometimes what I tell them turns out to be not actually what I've been listening to. Sometimes it may be to promote a band, or maybe I forgot, or I just don't want to admit I've been listening to the new Goldfinger album. 1. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

I've already worn this album out. Twice. Once you start listening to it, it's easy for it to repeat seven times in a row and then you realize you've been holding your pillow in the dark and shaking. Don't put this on if you're not in the right place.

So, I went to see a rock show at a synagogue last night. Go ahead and read that first sentence again. One of my favorite bands, Elbow, was coming into town and I couldn't pass it up despite having to go to DC on a rainy Sunday night.

Not sure what I was expecting when I walked in, but I was kind of shocked to see that it was actually...you know...a synagogue. I arrived in the middle of the opener's set, and felt like I walked into a theatre in the middle of Act I. The beautiful Sixth & I Synagogue is set up with three columns of pews on the ground floor and a wrap-around balcony overlooking the stage...which is less a stage than a raised platform where I imagine the rabbi usually chills. So I had the awkward opportunity to wander around in the dark and look for a place to sit. Luckily, I saw some open seats in the front corner, that people probably left open because they were too embarassed to walk in front of the stage in the dark to go claim them. Since good seat > embarrassment, I shrugged it off and grabbed a second row seat to enjoy the rest of the delightful Jessica Hoop, who played an acoustic set.

Speaking of acoustics...all I can say is wow. Synagogues being square shaped and all, and with the huge ceilings, I wish I had some type of sound-engineering lingo to explain it...it was just the best acoustics I've ever heard at a rock show. So, there was that. Which was nice.

After the break, the lights dimmed and I knew we were in for something special. The background music for "Starlings" began and two fit birds in black dresses ran out from the back carrying violins. Then the rest of the band walked out from behind us; I always get a kick out of a band walking through the crowd for a gig. As they reached the stage, I noticed that the whole group was carrying trumpets. If you've never heard the song "Starlings," there's this enormous sound throughout. Which they play live by sounding trumpets simultaneously. In the intimate venue, it was loud enough to melt my face. (Low quality video...but you get the idea)

It felt like a combination of theatre and stand-up since we were sitting down in pews and the audience was respectfully dead-silent during the songs. Guy Garvey was charming as he worked the crowd with jokes and stories between every song. Great to see the maturation of the front man since seeing Elbow at Arts Fest at PSU six or seven years ago. After one song, he sarcastically said, "Thank you. Now, any questions from the crowd?" One woman raised her hand and shouted, "where did you get your name?" Guy laughed before muttering, "it is quite a shit name, isn't it?" He went on to tell the story about a progressive British screenplay in which one of the characters claims that the most pleasing word in the English language is 'elbow.' Or as he put it: "Elllllllll-bow. But, if you don't know the story, it is quite a terrible name."

After playing through mostly new material, Guy asked if we knew the song "Newborn?" The crowd buzzed in anticipation and he informed those not in the know (who are ya?) that the first lines are: "I'll be the corpse in your bathtub/useless" and invited us to sing along to open the song. I would have to say that singing "I'll be the corpse in your bathtub" in a synagogue ranks in one of my most favorite moments ever. The band tore through the seven minute opus and received their first standing ovation of the night.

Everyone in attendance could feel something special in the air, including the band. Guy commented several times about how nice it was to be playing in this intimate atmosphere, even calling it "...the most beautiful gig we've ever played. Especially compared to some we play at home in Manchester. Some of those places are...well..." Here the bassist Pete interjected with "shitholes." Guy confirmed, "Yes. Shitholes would be appropriate."

The second highlight of the night came with the most beautiful track off Seldom Seen Kid, "One Day Like This." (haven't seen this video before...amazing) Guy asked us to help out with the chorus, singing "So throw those curtains wide/One day like this a year’d see me right." After a few practice runs through, Guy laughed and said, "that was close, this time try not to sing like you're Catholic." Being Catholic, and knowing I would never want to be accused of singing like one, I took that as an opportunity to belt it out. Everyone in attendance joined in and we nearly blew the square roof off the joint.

After a final, moving version of "Scattered Black and Whites," Guy told us it was their last song and the setup of the venue wouldn't really allow for an encore. The audience hoped to call his bluff, giving a standing ovation for a few minutes, but alas the house lights came on and that was all for the night. I was a little disappointed, as they hadn't played my favorites "Powder Blue" or "Any Day Now" and I didn't really want the night to end. But how can one complain after such a special night.

To top it off, I was able to snag drummer Richard Jupp's set list on the way out. Great reminder of an incredible night. Easily in the top three shows of my life. Cheers, fellas.

This last Thursday marked the first 'Jueves de Feria' without Sevilla's fallen hero, Antonio Puerta. Ryan, Sevilla fan numero uno over at Center Holds It recaps it better than I could.

A new friend introduced me to Annuals last week and I couldn't be more grateful. It seems I've been missing out on both her and this band for far too long.

Annuals are the brain child of North Carolina's Adam Baker, who was amazingly only 20 years old when he wrote the album Be He Me. When I was 20, the most important thing I created was a ramen noodle beer drink.

I love a lot of music, but I can count on one hand the amount of times when an album has taken me to another place the way this one has. Funeral...In the Aeroplane Over the Sea...White Pony...Kid A...that's some pretty steep company. We'll see how the album holds up in the coming months, but until then, go pick it up and thank me later.

Elbow is back, and they've brought drinking songs. One of my favorite bands has a new album, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. I feared the worst after they released a crappy radio album a few years back, but they've righted the ship and brought the bar-angry misery I know and love. In fact, this album might even be as good as Asleep in the Back. That's right, I said it.

If you're one of the poor souls reading this on a bleak Monday morning...that means you're not at the bars drinking. My condolences. But I do have something that should put a glimmer of sunshine in your soul. For the first time in over 20 years, Mexico's soccer team failed to qualify for the Olympics. First England failing to qualify for the Euros, now this. There is a soccer god and he is benevolent.

But it's not just that Mexico failed to qualify, it's how they missed out that is so spectacular. A group stage tie with Canada and loss to Guatemala set the stage for something so bizarre I'm still not sure what happened. With one game remaining in the group stage, Mexico and Canada sat tied with one point each and the same goal differential. To advance, they would each have to win their last game by more goals than the other.

Canada played the early game against a Guatemalan team that had already qualified for the next round. They rested all their starters and the glorious Canucks came out blazing. With a final goal in the 90th minute, Canada came to rest with a 5-0 win. Oh, how important that fifth goal would turn out to be.

In the late game, Mexico came up against Haiti, needing to win by at least 5 goals. After an early goal and a Haitian red card, it looks like Mexico would be able to do just that. Then came the second half. As immortalized in the video below, Mexico managed to miss chance after chance. They even had a few breakaways...FIVE ON ZERO. With Haiti obviously paid off, all Mexico needed to do was tap in the ball. And they failed. And failed. And failed. The final whistle sounded and the score read 5-1, Mexico. Nice win...but NOT nice enough. Enjoy watching the Olympics from your TV, you great soccer power. And Canada, nicely done.

I had another song lined up for today, but I was listening to the radio on the way to work and my face got blown off. I heard this enormous Zeppelin arena song with giant production, just the whole fucking song was huge! So I waited impatiently until the end of the song to find out who it could be--and of course they don't say.

Then it hits me--no, it couldn't be.

The Black Keys? How the hell could a two-person band make so much awesome noise?? Oh, maybe because of this guy in the back. Fucking Danger Mouse does it again.
